problem with canada?

art damage is brought to you by the expensive association

speaking of an expensive association, i heard a nurse in the local hospital say that if you go to Emergency Services while under the influence of a drug, you're essentially turned away.

Hospitals can't get away with choosing who to treat in big cities, what makes this island immune from making sense?

feeling pretty down. little things are having disproportionate effects on my security and happiness. diminished expectations.
scared to write a new album, afraid it will be the last for me.

i don't like going to sleep every nite because my dreams are about a lack of safety and known things. i'm tired when i wake up.

facebook is really good for me, i'm in touch with friends past and present. i am so lucky to have such a supportive group of people around me. i'm always learning.

i'm finding it difficult to keep all the balls in the air. i've fallen behind on so many things. too much to do, too many cigars smoked.

i have two side projects in the wings. not sure if they'll even happen.

on a more upbeat note: my latest song is in my myspace player. first song ; noted by others. i'm quite proud of it.

if you're reading this you're too close!! hehehe. check out the tune. it's the culmination of 25 years of writing my own material.

Art-Damage-LIVE25POSTER-3

hi pholks,

the art damage 25th anniversary concert is happening 1 1/2 days from now, i'm trying to relax and get things done but my nerves are nervous...

just put the finishing touches on a new song that has been getting good reviews from people around me. i had some difficulty getting it to sound right, but i'm learning a lot about the software and mastering in general.

there's a bit of buzz about the show, not all due to me... people around me are helping out with promotion, the great poster for the show, drives, and more. this really blows me away because i've been at this alone for a long time... having people come to me wanting to help signifies that i've "made it" in certain ways.

i've heard that i'm sitting on quite a bit of good music, and that it just needs wider exposure to be successful. i hope that's right!

efforts are underway to get my stuff into movies, trailers, tv, and videogames. not sure what the response will be to what i put out there but it sounds exciting.

i've had some great times and really bad times over the years.
this feels, oddly enough, like a starting point. i'm enjoying my studio so much that i feel i could make music forever and be happy no matter what the outside world's response to it was. i know from experience that the one constant is change...

anyway i'm looking forward to the show very much

i will do my best to make it worthwhile...

thanks

hi folks! wasn't doing so well for a while there... hardly did much but stay in bed. i didn't like it.

now, however, things are bloomin' lots going on.

i'm going to be working with someone else at making stuff in the studio hope it goes well...

i'm re-mastering ancient Phycus material for re-release on iTunes. all in all a fun time making them sound even more evil. cool to be talking to that crowd again.

looks like istvan kantor got hurt by someone?! wtf! careful monty, we need you around to show us the way.

also will be checking out brian ov phycus' Unireverse project on vinyl as well-- very cool packaging.

improvements to the studio, new toys, new samples, more HD space. all good.

looking at getting more jobs doing soundtrack work - i find it challenging.

had a promo bit on andrew duke's very long-running radio show where i said something like "this is art damage and you're listening to andrew duke" kindof thing.. nice to know that i'm famous enough that someone would want that from me... i hope i get some tunes up that show for sure. i'll keep trying.

i'm really enjoying twitter as it destroys the world. hehehe. help i think i'm being followed! haha.

me on twitter:

anyway i hope someone somewhere is enjoying this blog...

thanks

why am i doing this now?

art damage is brought to you by the expensive association

so i'm enjoying the internet once again, i'm quite active on facebook and love chatting up ex-girlfriends and long lost relatives...

i must admit that for a while i've been reading a lot about marketing and branding and so on. my reasons were many for getting into it. what i've noticed is that some marketers create things you actually want and are adept at sweetening the deal or getting your attention.

i hate it when i've signed up for something free with an email and then i start getting emails from them that have a subject line that starts RE: my latest offer
when i never sent them anything inquiring about that latest offer.

it just seems too manipulative. i would like to put together a nON-Marketing checklist of manipulative things that marketers do to sell something.

i'm going to name this project and tweet requests yahoo answers etc, to build up a library of yukky mean ways people get (or try to get) your money.

so feel free to comment on this and share your experiences!
i will tweet this also to get input there...

look for results (or lack of interest from everyone) here!

i hope you'll join in the discussion

i remain yours

back to blogging...

art damage is brought to you by the expensive association

wow! this is an exciting time for me with big highs and big low... intense is how i'd put it...

had to put my step mom's dog to sleep. i want to go like that!
oddly beautiful in its sadness and loss. i petted her up to the very end...
not even a sigh. much respect to the vet and his staff for being totally considerate of
my and the dog's feelings.

on the plus front i'm planning on making more changes around here. i've been a bit scared to make new music now that people are liking it. now i feel like i have a standard or expectations to live up to. i've had a block about composing for too long!
so i'm announcing that in 6 months come hell or high water an album of music will be relased on CD and electronically.

i'm doing internet again full on now that my service is back. watch this space for details...

Wow, my new tactic is to write this post in Microsoft Word thus the capitalization will be automatic and easier to read.

Magic is happening in the studio. I’m finding my Korg OASYS PCI is one of the best sounding synths I’ve ever heard! This is mainly because the PC is in the shoppe being fixed…

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/oasys-pci/files/

is a page where you can find the art damage bundle, a collection of patches for the OASYS PCI freely available for download.

Of course you have to have the hardware to use any of it…

• My buddy from ??? just put up his first myspace site,
I would love it if you checked it out IF you happen to like interesting noise ambient sounds. This guy knows his stuff and just one listening is not enough for his stuff. I have stuff he hasn’t released and I’ll tell you it’s good! He may send some stuff for me to “master” which I would love, but in the meantime definitely go to:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=376832805

Well, I hope that you enjoy that!

Reading: the four-hour workweek

It has lots of good advice.

Listening: Stereolab, Autechre, We love you

And more!

Gonna go for now, stay cool: it’s winter.

art damage is brought to you by the expensive association

well the dust has settled from my last perfomance, not great but i am appreciative that a guy came up to me after the show and told me he really liked my stuff. that counts for a lot!

i guess every small victory like that is what keeps me going

talked to one of my recording buddies last night (new year's eve) and i think a joint musical attempt is in order...

also an old release of mine (from the 80's) is getting a new life... as a split-side cassette release along with "the abusive step-dads" it's pretty heavy/silly/noisey/sampled stuff but the guy who's putting it out feels that it's some of his favorite art damage recordings! so thanks guys... i have more... i will try to post a link if that sort of thing will become available.

well i don't do this often but here you go: i'm promoting something else besides me!

I'm evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they're letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I'll let you know what I think once I've had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it's still free.

new projects:

i have a new video ready to upload

i might be doing mixing/mastering of a metal band

this not having internet is driving me crazy!!!

I need to get that looked after.

Friends of mine (recording dudes) are preparing to edge out into the virtual world. I will pump their shite once it’s live.

Busy doing projects for people. I designed a bunch of new t-shirts that get laughs when I show them to people. Give me time and I will have the new designs both at cafepress and Zazzle whichever you prefer.

More “live” shows are in the works, more documentary soundtracks in the making and all the while learning new techniques in Reason 4.0 among others.

Since sales of my Disabled Controls CD have topped out at 2 I will remind people that you can listen to the whole thing for free at isound. If you really are a stickler for sound quality CD’s are available.

just came out with a new video: modest misfortune

shout outs to my good friend todd up t-dot
and gary flannigan
who runs the nightwaves website -- devoted to all things 80's and synthetic, music wise. he manages to score great interviews with interesting players from all over. you might find him more articulate than I am. i just struggle through this.

one thing is for sure,
a home burned CD from the master recording actually sounds better than a manufactured CD as they have to go
through many steps to get to the final product. so when you buy an art damage CD, untlil further notice, it will sound amazing!
i'm not sure where i read that fact but it really made sense to me at the time.

hi folks and happy new year. 2007 was an exciting time for art damage and related projects...
2008 could be the year i blow up real good!

i'm still listening to more music than i'm making, unusual for me but an education.

i have more soundtracks coming up
and also i've caught wind of a neat project that i might be doing the mixing and mastering for.

i've been offered a live gig if i want it and i think i've recovered from the last one so i just might do it!
i'd do an all-ages gig for sure. not so hot on the bar shows...

i'm no further ahead on my new album
but in the mean time i should be ready to release my space magic ambient album on CDBaby.com using the profits from sellling the two CD's.

my myspace page has new songs on it as they now allow 6 songs per profile!
check it out:

the song from my disabled controls cd that people went nuts for is KLAXPLANET 2.0.
you can hear the whole thing for free at myspace.

well i survived the holidaze and got some nice music-related books as well as a MIDI cable. thanks, satan!

knifehammer show

i would like to tell you about my most recent gig.

it was interesting to me that i got the gig through myspace!

a band called knifehammer (metal) contacted me about playing
a bar show with other (metal) bands. i was stoaked at the idea
so i said yes

finally i show up for the gig and it's one technical problem after another
i get the computer going finally and
one of the other bands starts to play.
i began to drink too much
and when it was time to play
well let's say it one of my less inspired performances

most of the people left the room when i was on
thanks to the girl who danced
and to the other who bought a cd

traded shirts with knifehammer

got home only to find i had lost my DVD player
making it a very expensive night out

so i don't really want to play bar shows anymore

and that's all she wrote

bloggeroooo

back again

as promised:

intro to NEOism. you cannot put it in a wheelbarrow but it's worth mentioning none the less.

there is a particular open-pop-star-gone-mad Monty Cantsin/Istvan Kantor who was a big influence on me during the toronto years. i played one gig- Liberer Monty Cantsin- at Foufoon Electrique in Montreal. i played a MIDI drum pad triggering samples of drums and other things. it took forever to load the samples (floppys) in between songs... the band was Phycus, a project of the Neoist Machine Group. anyway the concert was to help out Istvan cause he got arrested by the FBI donating a blood painting to a gallery in New York. some got splashed on a Picasso by accident. anyway the show went really well and we sang a rousing chorus of Salut Les Riches with special guest Monty Cantsin himself on Vocals.

since then, Monty has released albums, made new videos (that are fantastic - wait for the link) and got the governor general's award for his work in video. oh canada. yay.

neoism itself is more of a stance than a philosophy, any attempts at nailing it down are immediately replaced with new ideas.

i worked on a recording project with Monty doing some of the tracks of the noise bible CD. it was a very intense time but very interesting to record with him. i manned the mix a few times and with some help got results.

here's some links for further reading:

how to annoy buskers

bloggeroooo

yep more from me...

i'd like to take this moment to recall a particularly death-defying performance i was a part of..

it was in the early '90's and one day i get a phonecall from Monty Cantsin/Istvan Kantor/AMEN. he tells me there's a performance going down and would i like to be a part of it? immediately i said yes! He told me to wear black pants, white shirt and a tie.

i showed up at the precise co-ordinates ready for anything. there was a busker's festival (street perfomers) going on and we had a performance to do. we had an entire city block cordoned off for our gig.

it went like this:

first we distributed 6 oil drums along the blocked off street. we knelt before our audience, in our right hands was gold colored poo. monty jumped to the roof of his van and began a speech on his megaphone... " i am the best friend you could ever have"
he went on for a bit then at a precise moment we threw the golden shit onto the ground and got up onto the oil drums. a strip of metal sheet was laid out from one end of the block to the other. each of the 6 people standing on the oil drums held a steam-iron. someone started pouring contact cement all down the strip of metal and a bit on each steam iron.

what happened next i was not ready for...

they lit the contact cement on fire!
10 foot high chemical flames shot down the street, my oildrum started to wobble and the audience let out a collective "gasp" and backed away from us... the firemen and police were getting very nervous at this point and we almost had fire engines visit us! the cement on my steam-iron started to drip onto the oven mitt i was wearing for protection, it was getting hot!!
as the flames finished we then proceeded to smash the hell out of the oilcans. and the oven mitt kept smoldering...

well that was certainly one of the most memorable performances i've ever been a part of!

i'm certainly glad i didn't get injured.

ahhh neoism... so inspirational. so dangerous...

i'll explain more about Monty Cantsin (s) but not Karen Elliot...
in my next post.

till then

play safe and have fun!

intro to the world of art damage

hi!

this is the first posting of the
art damage ultrablog

home of the whopper.

glad you could join me

i've been sorting out various technical issues with my recording studio and this has pre-empted any creation. so i'm reading and calling tech support.
the photo above is a video still from the infamous "blood performance" where i spontaneously became a monty cantsin spontaneously during an all-ages gig and withdrew my blood with a syringe and then sprayed it on to the snow channel of a black and white TV. it was an interesting experiment as the so-called Chinese Whispers effect where the true story of what went down was significantly altered as it passed around town... it actually appeared in a local college newsweekly that i licked the blood off of the TV. Not a bad idea i'll have to try that...
some girl thought i was injecting drugs on stage. THAT IS SO NOT TRUE!
instead i was smoking hash behind the building before my performance and my friend gave me a sublingual ativan before the show (2mg) but that's all. i promise.
anyway the whole thing was filmed by trusty perp videonog abominog. i should figure out how to get that video on youtube! maybe some people might like that...

hehehe

in the meantime i've concentrated less on performance art (damage) and more on music.
hopefully ideas like listening to music should catch on someday and i can put the on-stage antiks to rest. (best left to the professionals). i hope that if you want to hear what kind of music i create don't expect industrial noise... all the time.
you might be surprised
